The first transport brought us to the warehouse. I emerged from it long enough to look around, scanning to see whether any of the fae would have followed us. Max remained motionless, though he appeared to be alive. Jessica was tense, her whole body stiff, and I could detect the fear within her.

“What was that?” she whispered.

I looked around the warehouse. The protections here needed to be strong enough to defend us against the fae, and I simply wasn’t sure that they were. Logan had been here a few times, often enough that it was possible that he had placed something within the warehouse that would allow him access. Knowing he’d been working against me all that time, I didn’t know whether or not there was anything that he could have done. It was possible I wouldn’t ever know.

“That was the fae deciding that they were going to return to the other side of the Veil,” I said. “And I think they want the war that Philast warned me was coming.” Hell, they might even be responsible for it.

“How? I mean… How?”

“They aren’t full blood. Which means that apparently they can perform spells nearly as well as any mage can.”

“Cassie, if they can perform spells like that, we are going to be in far more trouble than we knew.”

“I understand.”

“I’m not sure that you do. The most powerful mage still has limits to how much power they can access. It’s not the same for you. When you open a connection to the other side of the Veil, you’re able to access the kind of power even the most powerful mage can’t use on their own. They could do it if they were able to borrow from something like the wand that we found, but otherwise…”

I thought I understood why the fae would have treated the half-blood that way. If they were able to perform spells, and if for some reason they were able to use that magic in a way that could overpower the fae, it might be there would be nothing to stop them.

“I don’t know that we can think about that right now.”

“When, then?”

“I don’t know,” I looked up at her for a moment before turning to Max, rolling him to his side. I stared at him. “Max?”

He didn’t say anything. Every so often, he groaned, but there was nothing else from him, and nothing that suggested that he would even come around.

“What’s wrong with him?”

“I don’t know. They hit him with a spell.”

“Can he just shift back into his wolf form and heal himself?”

Most of the time, that was all that Max had to do in order to restore himself, though I had been around him before when that didn’t work. The last time, we’d crossed over the Veil and he had drawn power there, though I didn’t know if it would be safe for us to do that now.

“Come on, Max. I need you to come around.”

“Cassie,” Jessica said.

“What is it?”

“There’s someone here.”

“You can feel it?”

“There’s some sort of energy trying to worm its way through the protections.
